Do's and Don'ts for the amateur wig wearer.

Like your real hair, your wigs also need your TLC and attention. Knowing how to properly care for your wig is vital to keeping them in the best possible condition for the long-haul. At LHT, our premium top quality virgin remy human hair wigs are made to last as long as they are properly cared for and loved. Below are a few tips from our beloved Glamour Queen E on some simple "Do's and Don'ts" that even the most amateur of wig wearers can start implementing today.

Do's

1. Make sure your wig is the right size for you.  Before buying a wig check your head measurements.  Doing this will help you choose the cap size that is just right for you.  Check out LHT's wig cap sizes today.

2. Always wear a wig cap. Y'all please do not neglect this step. Even if you don't have hair, please wear a wig cap anyway! Wearing a wig cap helps to not only ensure your hair is properly secured but also serves as a buffer between your wig and the oils on your scalp (regardless of whether or not you have hair on your head). Ultimately this helps to keep your wig clean and adds to a comfortable wig wearing experience.  At LHT every wig purchase comes with 2 FREE wig caps.

3. Personalise your look.  To all my wig wearers out there, don't be afraid to style your wig. Remember it is hair NOT a cap so treat it like so.  Every so often, treat yourself and take your unit to a hairdresser to get your wig styled. All LHT wigs are made from premium high quality virgin remy human hair that allows you the flexibility to wash, cut, colour, and style your wig as you would your own hair.

4. Care for your wig.  Wash and condition your wig using products that are safe and without harmful chemicals.  Not all hair products are the same.  Avoid shampoos and conditioners containing sulphates and parabens which can damage your wig. Also remember that unlike your real hair, wigs do not have any source of moisture, so always use gentle shampoos and make sure to deep condition your wigs too.

5. Store your wig properly.  When you are not wearing your wig please use a wig stand; don't just shove it in a drawer somewhere.  This will help keep it in shape and reduce the risk of creating knots and tangles.

Don'ts

1. Don't use excessive heat. Just as heat can damage human hair, when styling your human hair wigs make sure to avoid using excessive heat. If you’re curling or straightening your wig on a regular basis, it’s good practice to use a hair protectant spray.

2. Don't wear wigs that are too tight. Doing this will only give you a headache and will more than likely break your natural hair. Remember tighter does not always equal better.

3. Don't neglect your natural hair underneath.  Caring for your real hair is just as important as caring for your wig.  Whilst wearing your wig make sure to protect your hair underneath. Wrap your hair or better still do a few small plaits or some cornrows. This is not only a protective style for your natural hair but allows your wig to be worn as flat down as possible giving you a more natural appearance. Never squish your hair under the wig. This will cause tangling and damage to your hair.

4. Don't sleep in your wig (if you can help it). It is best practice to take off your wig overnight.  That said I am well aware that sometimes that just aint gonna happen.  On such occasions it is important that you take proper care of your wig so that the friction from rubbing of the hair when asleep is minimal if at all. E.g to protect your wig overnight, use a silk or stain pillow case, wear a silk or satin bonnet, avoid cotton head wraps (or other rough material).

5. Don't over-wash your wig.  Washing your wig every one to two weeks should be adequate unless you are using heavy or hair products that weigh down your hair, harsh chemicals, or if you are engaged in regular high intensity physical activity. Remember excessive washing will shorten the lifespan of your wig.
